A Detailed Guide on How to Exfoliate Your Skin

WHAT IS EXFOLIATION?

Exfoliation is the removal of dead cells from the surface of the skin.

Exfoliation is a natural process and one which happens on a regular basis every single day.

However, as we get older, this process slows down (one of the main reasons why younger skin is baby soft and glowing). Other factors which compromise the process of exfoliation are lifestyle, weather, incorrect use of skincare products, lack of hydration etc.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EXFOLIATION?

  • Exfoliation helps clear clogged pores: dead skin cells trapped on the surface of your skin will clog skin pores, leading to acne and blemishes. A regular exfoliation routine will not only remove dead skin cells, it will also prevent excess oil from being trapped and from congesting pores.
  • Exfoliation helps reduce post-inflammatory marks: Acne and blemishes often leave behind reddish or brown marks long after the breakout has healed. Consistent exfoliation can help remove these damaged skin cells replacing them with younger, unmarked skin cells, giving your skin a smoother and blemish free appearance.
  • Exfoliation helps fade pigmentation spots: pigmentation caused by age, sun exposure, hormonal changes etc. are caused when pigmented cells (those with excessive melanin) rise to the surface of the skin. Exfoliation helps to break these down so that they gradually face and disappear over time.
  • Exfoliation helps your skin appear more youthful: when dry dead skin cells are removed from the surface of the skin it reveals newer, younger skin cells below. These smoother cells reflect light better giving the skin a more youthful appearance and glow.
  • Exfoliation helps dry skin absorb product better: if you have dry skin, you will notice that exfoliation reveals younger and more absorbent skin cells which absorb moisture more efficiently. In fact, ALL skin types show an improved absorption of skincare products post exfoliation.

WHAT ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO EXFOLIATE?

Physical exfoliants are the most accessible and understood ways to exfoliate. They are popular and easy to use. They can be easily whipped up at home. The most commonly available physical scrubs are sugar, coffee grounds, nut shells, granules, beads and other similar abrasive ingredients.

Physical exfoliants physically lift off/ remove dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.

Physical exfoliants have their advantages - using them will stimulate blood circulation giving you that rosy glow. They also show instant results which is always welcome.

The downside of physical exfoliants is the nature of the abrasive material used. This abrasive material can be damaging to the surface of the skin as they can cause micro tears. If you prefer using physical exfoliants look for those formulated with less abrasive materials such as powdered oatmeal or gram flour.

Chemical exfoliants, on the other hand, use exfoliating acids or enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells.

If you have sensitive skin which can get irritated by the use of physical exfoliants then this method or promoting cell turnover is far more effective.

Chemical exfoliants interact with the top layers of the skin to gently lift up and remove dead skin cells, dirt and surface oils which make your skin look dull and lusterless. Facial acids and enzymes do this by breaking apart the bonds that hold the skin cells together. This helps the skin to regenerate itself resulting in brighter, smoother and clearer skin.

3 COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID WHILE EXFOLIATING

Do not over exfoliate

There is such a thing as too much exfoliation. This can be damaging to your skin. If you have oily or blemish prone skin, twice or thrice a week is sufficient. Dry to normal skin does not need to be exfoliated more than once a week

Know your exfoliants.

Facial acids such as AHA’s and BHA’s work differently for different skin types. Alpha Hydroxy Acids are hydrophilic (or water loving) and are great for dry to normal skins. Beta Hydroxy Acids are lipophilic (or oil loving) and work well for oily or congested skin.

Do not forget to pamper your skin post exfoliation.

Follow up with a hydrating serum (such as Vya Naturals Hyaluronic Acid Serum) or one that builds the skin barrier (such as Vya Naturals Niacinamide Serum) and a moisturizer to seal it all in.
