The Only 10 Skincare Tips You Need To Know

The Only 10 Skincare Tips You Need To Know

If you are new to the skincare game and have only just started to research this topic then you must be swamped with the amount of information out there both online and offline - a lot of it contradictory and confusing to a newbie.

However it doesn’t need to be.

There IS a way to cut through the clutter and to focus on just a few key things.

To make it easier for you we’ve looked through our extensive archives and simplified it down to 10 tips.

Here are - in no particular order - the only 10 skincare tips you need to be aware of in order to have the best skin possible.

Skincare Tip #1: Know Your Skin Type

It is imperative to know your skin type before you create a skin care regime for yourself. Skin types are roughly divided into normal, oily, dry and combination skin. The best skincare regime is one that takes into account your skin type and the special care that it needs. So do take the time to identify and understand your skin type and choose products that bring out the best in your skin.

Skincare Tip #2: CTM or Cleansing Toning Moisturizing

The most basic skincare routine can be summarized in 3 alphabets - CTM. This is an industry byword and stands quite simply for Cleansing Toning Moisturizing. This is the essence of any skincare routine regardless of age, skin type, gender and/or ethnicity. To this we like to add another alphabet - S. This stands for serum as well as for sunscreen (more on both below).

Skincare Tip #3: Separate Morning & Evening Routine

You need to create a separate skincare routine for the morning and for the evening. This is because during the day your skin needs protection from the elements to which it is exposed while at night it repairs and restores itself.

Skincare Tip #4: Sunscreen is a must, regardless of weather

UV rays from the sun are one of the primary reasons for skin damage. There are two types of UV rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin and are responsible for aging. They are present even if the weather is cloudy or if it is raining or hailing outdoors. UVA rays are present as long as there is daylight. UVB rays on the other hand are less penetrating and are the ones responsible for tanning and burning of the skin. Look for sunscreen that protects you from both types of UV rays (also called wide spectrum sunscreen).

Skincare Tip #5: Use Products in the Right Order

There IS a right order in which to apply your skincare products. You may have the most amazing skin care collection in the world. But if you do not apply them in the right order, you deny your skin of getting its full benefit. Plus you end up wasting some hard earned money. As a rule of thumb while applying skincare look at the texture. You start with the thinnest texture (essences, lotions, serums) and end with the thickest or heaviest (moisturizer). Here is a story we did on 'How To Layer Your Skincare Like A Pro'.

Skincare Tip #6: Exfoliation is key for great skin

To understand the role that exfoliation can play in a good skincare routine, you need to first understand the life cycle of skin cells. It takes approximately 28 days for new skin cells to work their way up across the many layers of the dermis. Exfoliating removes the dead cells which cause your skin to look dull and lifeless. Skincare Tip #7: Know Your Serums

Understand serums and the role they can play in your skin care routine. Serums are confusing at times mainly because they are categorized by skin concern and not by skin type. It’s best to think of them as concentrated skincare products that penetrate deep into the upper layers of your skin. Serums are applied after cleansing and toning and before moisturizing. Here’s a guide to serums if you wish to know more about this wonder product.

Skincare Tip #8: Invest in an eye cream

Why not just use a moisturizer instead of an eye cream, you may well ask. Well, for starters, the skin around your eye area is super delicate and thin as compared to the rest of your face. It also does not contain as many oil glands. Facial movements such as squinting, smiling etc also cause much more movement of this skin as compared to say your cheeks or forehead. This is why products like eye creams or eye serums are formulated specifically for the delicate eye area. Read this to understand how eye creams could be of help to you.

Skincare Tip #9: Change your skincare routine with the change in seasons

Your skincare needs to change just like we change other aspects of our lifestyle with the seasons. The light-weight cleansers and moisturizers that serve us so well in warmer months need to be replaced by heavier lotions that protect us from drying winter winds. Similarly humid monsoon days cause skin to secret more oils and sebum so our cleansers needs to be updated to tackle this situation! Here’s a guide to summer or warm weather skincare.

Skincare Tip #10: Chemicals are bad for your skin/ anything natural is good for your skin is a myth.

The natural skin care industry has a lot to answer for this misconception. There is a fair amount of scaremongering around this issue so it is best to be better informed. There are synthetic ingredients or chemicals that are wonderful for your skin just as there are natural ingredients that can do immense damage to it. Natural ingredients like certain essential oils or nettles for example can be powerful irritants when applied to your skin. Some chemicals such as retinol or ascorbic acid (vitamin C) are beneficial when applied topically. It’s always best to do some research.

Before we leave you here’s a thought:

Skin is a living breathing organism. It changes with time; it is rarely perfect. It is happy when you are happy and stressed when you are angry and upset. Take the time to get to know and understand your skin.

We hope these 10 tips will help you in some way towards achieving this goal.
