Washing your face is one of the first step in any skincare routine. So, today's we're going to discuss all your cleansing FAQ's.
1) I HAVE DRY SKIN AND CLEANSERS MAKE IT EVEN DRIER. CAN I SKIP THIS STEP AND JUST SPLASH MY FACE WITH WATER?
If your cleanser dries out your skin it just means you are not using the right cleanser for your skin type.
For dry skin choose a face wash that has been specially formulated to cleanse without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
Vya Naturals Vitamin C cleanser is a good option and works wonderfully for my dry skin. A little bit goes a long way.
Do not skip cleansing. It is an essential step to getting healthy, happy skin.
2) I HAVE OILY SKIN. I LIKE TO USE CLEANSERS THAT MAKE MY SKIN "SQUEAKY CLEAN" SO THAT I KNOW ALL THE OIL HAS BEEN REMOVED. BUT WITHIN A FEW HOURS IT'S OILY AGAIN. WHAT CAN I DO TO AVOID THIS?
Once again, if your cleanser leaves your skin feeling tight and "squeaky clean" it is probably overly harsh and is stripping your skin of the natural oils that it needs.
A cleanser for oily skin should remove the excess oil but not completely remove the normal level of oil that keeps your skin healthy.
Vya Naturals co-founder Bindu has oily skin and she reaches for our AHA/BHA cleanser in order to clean her face.
Follow up with Vya Naturals AHA BHA Toner.
Also washing your face twice a day is plenty. Resist the urge to constantly wash your face throughout the day.
When your skin is overly dry thanks to an aggressive use of face wash, the brain signals to your skin to send more oil towards the surface as a compensatory measure.
This is why your skin starts to feel oily again no matter how many times a day you wash it.
3) DO I HAVE TO WASH MY FACE TWICE A DAY? IF I DO A REALLY GOOD CLEANSE AT NIGHT CAN I SKIP MY FACE WASH IN THE MORNING?
A lot depends on your skin type and lifestyle.
If you have oily or combination skin your skin will have secreted oils (sebum) during the night.
Your morning face wash will remove these so that your skin is ready for the next steps in your morning skin care routine.
If your night time skincare routine involves the use of retinoids or heavy moisturizers or facial oils, you will once again need to remove all traces of these that may linger on your skin.
Our bed linens trap bacteria, and some of that can transfer from your pillowcase to your skin. Another good reason for a morning cleanse ;-)
For those of us who have an early morning walk or jog as part of our morning routine a thorough cleanse to remove traces of dirt and pollution is a must. Start your skin off with a clean slate in the morning. Clean skin is better at absorbing skincare products. It is also less likely to have blocked pores and acne as a result.
4) WHICH IS THE BETTER TEMPERATURE WATER WITH WHICH TO WASH MY FACE - HOT OR COLD?
Dermatologists advise using water that is at room temperature (or lukewarm) with which to wash your face.
This is the best temperature for all skin types and ensures that your skin gets cleansed effectively.
Once you are done with the cleansing step, you can splash your face with cold water in order to depuff the face and to reduce the appearance of pores.
5) ARE CLEANSING WIPES A GOOD IDEA FOR MY SKIN?
Short answer - NO!
The only time you should be using a wipe would be if you do not have access to water and cleanser. (For example after a sweaty workout or an outdoor hike etc.)
Do follow up with a proper cleanse the minute you can.
Cleansing wipes are not effective at removing all traces of dirt and impurities from your skin.
Using a cleansing wipe will lift off most but not all of the pollution, makeup and dirt. The rinsing action of water is what completes and finally cleanses the skin.
